It is hard to believe that Connie is only in Year 8. In her recent test, she chose to write a creative essay which was sophisticated, showed deep level thinking, and maturity beyond her actual age. It was an excellent piece of work! I have recommended to Connie to consider entering some writing competitions as I think she is quite gifted in narrative writing. Over the term we also covered other writing genres and Connie continues to work hard to develop good skills in these areas too. Currently we are working on Report Writing. Connie continues to develop her critical thinking and critical writing skills. She is a very mature student and is able to express her opinions well. Over the past 5 weeks, we have focused on the differences between argument essays, explanation essays and discursive essays. The structure of these different styles of writing requires the student to use language in slightly different ways. Connie is a very capable and mature student who is keen to improve her English marks. Our work so far has focused on her critical writing skills and analysis of given topics. Connie is a fast learner. We are currently using the topics from the Year 10 English workbook and developing skills relating to essay writing structure, grammar, punctuation and logical flow of paragraphs. We are also focusing on how to ‘mind map’ prior to writing an essay. This technique will assist Connie to write more interesting and complex paragraphs that demonstrate her ‘voice’ with evidence to support her opinions.
